A Polish Adventure for Limerick YouthBank
21/01/2010
It was an action-packed experience led by the Polish team which included a history tour of Gedansk, cultural exchanges, environmental workshops, and finished on a high with a drama presentation, attended by the local Mayor and other key guests.
Reminiscing on the trip Mary Hogan said:
“It was particularly memorable for me as it was my first time on a plane which was great. We enjoyed seeing what life was like for young people in Poland and life certainly seemed simpler there. We played ball games which were good fun and a contrast to our computers and play stations. As well as learning about life in Poland we put on an Irish night and showed them Irish dancing, hurling and camogie.”
The environmental theme showed the group the similarities in their home towns as recycling was high on the agenda and both towns were experiencing regeneration of old factory buildings.
Different languages presented no barriers as everyone was on the same wave length and keen to be understood. While the food was good, many were glad to find McDonalds during the visit to Gedansk!
The final night’s drama presentation had everyone working hard together as Mary recalled:
“Our theme was sustaining the environment and we prepared the drama together, designed the costumes and created the backdrop using all our combined talents for art, drama and dance. It was a tremendous confidence boost for us all.”
Since returning from Poland the group have been busy recruiting new members and have completed a residential to train the new committee in the grant-making process.
Mary is now at college in Tralee but still makes the 150 mile trip home to keep in touch with progress at the YouthBank as she explained:
“As well as our Polish trip, I’ve met up with YouthBanks all over Ireland and travelled to events in Belfast and Dublin. I’ve had such great experiences I encourage others to get involved. It’s a really good opportunity to make new friends and try new experiences.”
