Healthy Progress at Ballymena YouthBank

They took a more in-depth look at young people’s health when they participated in an 11 week training programme on health issues, organised by Boots their local community pharmacy.

The topics covered each week were selected by the group as member Michelle Porter explained:
“We learnt about minor ailments, drugs and alcohol, skin care and sun protection, first aid, asthma and diabetes, sexual health, and vaccinations. Each session was well delivered and very interactive.

“The drug and alcohol talk was given by a guest speaker from the Hope Centre who captivated everyone with a young boy’s story, which he then revealed as his own life experience!

“As part of understanding a healthy lifestyle we took a fitness test which left some of us breathless! Healthy eating was another memorable evening when everyone was beating and chopping as we prepared omelettes and fruit salad.”

The final session was a residential organised by Michelle based at Clear Sky outdoor pursuit centre on Strangford Lough with team building activities from canoeing to orienteering.

A celebration evening completed the programme when members prepared presentations on a variety of health topics for an audience of their peers, friends, family, and community representatives, including the Mayor of Ballymena.

While this can seem nerve wracking it’s a very worthwhile experience as Michelle explained:
“Speaking in public can be a daunting thought, but we work as a team preparing carefully and once the night is underway, it’s a great buzz and is tremendous for building self confidence.

“Through YouthBank I’ve learnt about decision-making, interview skills, and presentation styles.  It’s this kind of experience which has helped me with my university application and I’m now in first year studying social work at the University of Ulster.”
